THE OBJECTIVE

*To capture a "live" sound
*To not worry about small mistakes, recording
artifacts (background noises, chatter)
*To not clean up the recording (ie. noise/hiss reduction)
*To minimise overdubs so as not to complicate the sound
(vocals and maybe 1 or 2 instruments can be overdubbed)
*To keep it raw

THE PROCESS

*Record live (as much as possible) to 8track
*Use first good take
*Transfer tracks to computer for digital mixing
(synchronise all tracks that have warped out of
synch due to tape stretching)
*Add no effects beyond EQ
*Keep it raw

1. Casts A Shadow
2. Badlands

Both songs were recorded September 21st, 2004
during the "Album In A Day" experiment in which no
songs were prepared, everything was to be written in one day. Six songs were eventually created and recorded
in one long exhausting day.
"Casts A Shadow" was completely improvised on
the spot with vocals overdubbed. Vocal manipulations near
the end of the track were controlled by Harvey live as Robin
was singing them.
"Badlands" was written earlier in the morning
and was given one rehearsal before being recorded
in a single take.
